Linen in the City: Why This Fabric Has Become More Than a Seasonal Statement

Geposted von Justina Rudzinskienė am

Linen often carries a very distinct image in our imagination — white dresses, the seaside, bare feet in the grass, and slow summer days. It is a beautiful association, yet it reflects only a small part of what linen represents today.

In reality, linen is one of the oldest natural fabrics in the world, accompanying people for thousands of years. Its history dates back to Ancient Egypt, where linen textiles symbolized luxury, purity, and quality. Across Europe, linen was long valued for its durability and practicality - a fabric appreciated not only for its appearance, but also for its longevity.

Over time, it was not linen itself that changed, but our relationship with it. Once associated mainly with holidays, leisure, and a natural summer aesthetic, linen today has adapted to the rhythm of modern life. It has moved into the city, into everyday dressing, contemporary tailoring, and more structured silhouettes.

When creating modern garments, however, natural composition alone is no longer enough. Equally important is how a fabric adapts to everyday routines and practical needs. For this reason, some of our linen pieces are crafted from carefully balanced fabric blends.

Combined with viscose, cotton, or other fibers, linen retains its natural character while gaining additional softness, reduced creasing, a more fluid drape, and easier care. This becomes especially important in modern silhouettes - suits, waistcoats, wide-leg trousers, or structured blazers - where both natural ease and refined elegance are essential. Linen has therefore become more versatile not only aesthetically, but practically as well.

Advances in textile technology and a more contemporary understanding of comfort have also shaped this evolution. Today, clothing is expected to offer not only beauty, but functionality - how it feels in movement, during travel, or throughout long days of wear. Linen naturally supports these needs through its breathable, moisture-absorbing qualities and its ability to create a feeling of lightness even during the most intense summer days.

Within InAvati collections, linen appears in many forms - from lightweight summer pieces to more refined city silhouettes. For us, the most important aspect is preserving what makes linen truly valuable: its natural character, lightness, and comfort, while adapting it to the needs of modern living.
